The complexity and exclusivity are the main features of watches A. Lange & Sohne, which allow this Saxon manufactory to keep the status of a luxury watch brand. This is the only brand of super-premium class watches, which is not located in Switzerland.
Watch factory A. Lange & Sohne equipped with the most advanced and innovative technologies, is compactly accommodated in a former Glashutte brewery, now re-equipped. Compactly – because mass production was never in its plans. One of the mottos of the brand is "The Demand Should Always Exceed Supply." Thanks to this principle, each sample of watches by A. Lange & Sohne is an exclusive and expensive subject, designed for sophisticated collectors.
The brand was founded in 1845. But before that, being a master of watchmaking, Ferdinand Adolph Lange created the famous clock in Dresden's Semper Opera House, which perfectly reflected his aspiration for innovation and excellence. Until now there exists a work diary of Ferdinand Adolf, being the source of inspiration for company’s employees when creating new models. In 2010, in honor of the 165th anniversary of the company founding, an anniversary collection Homage to F. A. Lange was issued. It was aimed at honouring the memory of the founder. For watch cases in this collection a new gold honey-coloured alloy with high density was developed, and it was superior to all other gold alloys. While the movements of these watches were delicately decorated with handmade engraving.
Despite the strong position of the "classic of watchmaking", the company tries to add new complications to each new model. And each collection is provided with new patents. So the iconic Lange 1 was released; in 1994 the watch, in fact, gave the brand a second birth. The company releases new versions of this model so far, and they are complemented by exclusive complications such as the Lange 1 Tourbillon, the watch with a moon phase indicator Lange 1 Moon Phase, the watch with world time function Lange 1 Time Zone. A unique asymmetrical design with the main dial offset to the center and large date display are characteristic of all the models. The back cover of the watch is transparent and displays the details of the mechanism, delicately decorated and ornamented with handmade engraving.
Lange 1 Time Zone is one of the model watches with world time function. Just a pressing of a special button allows seeing time in the other time zone. You can follow moving owing to the ring with names of 24 world capitals rotating around the dial, this way a particular time zone can be represented. The watch is made of white gold, and its hands have luminescent coating, so you can use them even in the dark.
In 2009, for the collection of Lange Zeitwerk, the company has patented a completely innovative solution for indicating the time. It made possible producing mechanical watches without hands. The time is shown by figures placed in the windows, and can be instantly read even with a cursory glance. But this convenience hides a complex mechanism, which rotates three disks moving with precision, the disks have indicators of hours and minutes.
But, not going to rest on its laurels, in 2013 the A. Lange & Sohne brand presented the Grand Complication, the most complicated till nowadays watch of the manufactory. In its mechanism the chime strikes every 15 minutes and every hour. Among other functions are a minute repeater, perpetual calendar and split-seconds chronograph, with help of which you can measure time intervals with a 1\5 sec precision. All this complex diversity is implemented in a simple and clear design with white enamel dial, classic Arabic numerals and gold hands. On the main dial four symmetrical easy-to-read extra dials are located; they don’t attract too much attention.
